Welcome

This is about improving our drawing experiences, and hopefully have something to build on and expand our critiques. If you have a drawing you want to talk about, you should be able to post pictures and comments. If you have difficulty, just email me! Should be fun! Thanks!

12-16-14 Life Draw CAM #2

Ditto.

12-16-14 CAM Life Drawing #1

I have struggled with trying to stay loose and at the same time allow my voice to just be . . . . a struggle I think we all have. Sometimes it works, sometimes it sucks! This one is somewhere in the middle.

Drawing the 3rd, 11-25-14

So , I go from the ridiculous to the sublime.

CAM Life Drawing 11-25-14

Drawing 25 minutes, graphite, charcoal on funky paper. This is a handmade Japanese paper with shell impregnated in it and a scrapey texture. So it has bits in it that reflect light, and not particularly friendly to charcoal! And yes, I changed the narrative a little bit. ;-)

CAM life drawing 11-25-14

After being in absentia for a couple of weeks, I did not anticipate doing much. This is a 15 minute drawing, graphite, charcoal on toned paper. Sometimes,  if I think I do not to expect too much of myself, I let the door ease open and good things walk in.

A Studio Drawing - No Model

This is from the last pose of the 21st - decided to develop it in a couple different ways - one in acrylic not finished yet - and there may be more - I'm trying to germinate this seed in my head!

CAM life drawing 10-14-14

Not a great night for finish work, but an excellent one for experimenting! This one is wet paper, wet gooey graphite, painting with water, using Mr. Clean sponge, scraping stuff off, putting it back on, repairing mistakes, etc.

A sample for my students - from gesture to drawing without model

Get a good gesture, and you can have something to refer to in future work in your studio.
This done in chunky charcoal on newsprint.
Not an exquisite drawing - feels a little stiff, I like the gesture better - but it took 10 minutes. And since I have a record in gesture, I can do this again, and again, if I want to.
This is wet graphite on my own not toxic watercolor paper.

CAM life draw 10-7-14 #3

Wet paper, NuPastels, some also wet.

CAM life draw 10-7-14 #2

There is white pastel stick, also wet, applied to damp stinky paper.

CAM life draw 10-7-14 funky paper and new tools

I left my head and my paper home so I borrowed some watercolor paper. Drawing was hideous, so I decided to tinker with it by scrubbing it with wet paper towels. Drawing was still hideous, but discovered that colored graphite can turn into ink when you wet it. Only problem: this paper has some funky something in it; when you wet it a peculiar odor wafts up to your nostrils. Smells so bad I can't keep it in the studio - so it sits outside on the porch!
This drawing is 1 of 3 of the same pose, done with wet paper, wet soft graphite sticks and manipulating the graphite with paper towels, mr. clean sponges, etc.

CAM life drawing D3 9-30-14

More funky paper. Not a great drawing, could benefit with WHAT???

 Cropping!

WHERE??

So much fun!

CAM life drawing D2 9-30-14

Experimenting with funky paper. It has bits of shell embedded, handmade, Japanese - probably not archival - who cares? So there is a natural texture and sheen which sort of gives you a foot up!

9-30-14 CAM life drawing D1 cropped

A lesson in cropping - this is just one version - I have several. But for my class - a project can be changed just by the way you present it!

CAM LIfe Drawing 9-16-14 #2

Hmmmm, left this one alone! I started all my drawings last night 2 or 3 times. Turned them upside down, tore one up completely, so I wouldn't have to look at the same line my brain drew and refused to draw any other! It's like digging a ditch, and you can't get out, you just keep digging!!!

CAM life drawing 9-16-14 #1

Feels weighty, starting tinkering with it - bad news, somebody stop me! I must be a little OCD a dear friend said!

CAM Life draw 9-9-14 #4

Now this is a bit closer to my working method, but still not polished! YIPPEE!

CAM life draw 9-9-14 #3

I'm liking this one, I didn't tell you everything, you have to figure some of it out yourself!

CAM life draw 9-9-14 #2

Hmmmmmm....

CAM Life draw 9-9-14 #1

A good night, I have decided I cannot divorce myself from who I am. A friend once told me I can only speak in my own voice. Maybe I can tinker with the octave from time to time just to keep it fresh, but as they say, "It is what it is."

CAM life drawing 8-26-14

New toys to play with, Derwent XL Graphite Sticks - really big sticks, different colors as well as the normal gray. Paper makes a huge difference, the rougher the better, better tooth holds color better, slick paper not as effective!

Changes!

Worked on this one from the previous graphite one. Added paint, paper, gesso, more paint, paper. Moved stuff around. Got a bit messy, some technical issues. But I like it. And then I may tear it to bits and make another one! Maybe not just like this one, but another one!

Life Draw CAM 8-12-14

Getting tired by this time, a bit stale now, but still something interesting about this. I may take this one and incorporate it into something else. We shall see . . . .

Life Draw CAM 8-12-14

This was fun! The area of coming together of the hand, elbow, breast, belly was rather complex but somehow made it easier to do - like working a puzzle. Then you have the bit of relief with the hand, and chin and the lightest shoulder behind everything - sort of contradictory. And I didn't overwork it - yay!

Life Draw CAM 8-12-14

I'm liking this one the more I look at it - don't think I'll tinker with it anymore.

The last crop

Just trimmed away a bit of the leg and top, seems to be more peaceful or something, yes?

Crop Version 2

This means something else. I mean it could just go anywhere.

Not so contrived after all?

Crop version 1

Extended Pose Night Aftermath!

I wanted to see if I could put into practice the theory that I could actually work without the model in front of me. And I wanted to see how far I could kill it before bringing it back. And I wanted to see if cropping would help - it does - following you will see how much better it looks when half of it isn't there! HA!

CAM life drawing 6-10-14

I like these, but I'm still not satisfied with how I'm "expanding" my expression.

CAM life drawing 5-13-14 short pose

This was a 15 minute pose - and I can do better with these if I actually hold off drawing for awhile and just put down the barest minimum to express what is going on.

CAM life drawing 5-13-14

A more successful attempt at trying not to work my drawings to death. (I think)

Drawing night 4-22-14

I fell into my comfort zone that I always try to break out of, but just couldn't do it this time.

April 15, 2014 life draw 2

This one I feel better about, it was the last pose.

April 15, 2014 life drawing

Last night, first night back. Didn't expect much, and didn't get much either. Shouldn't be disappointed, right? This drawing isn't great, but there's something about it . . . .
