I bought some different paper by accident. I had intended to buy some Strathmore 400 series medium drawing paper, and I got Strathmore 400 series smooth paper, suitable for pen and ink. I first thought "Oh Phooey!" - I don't want to go to all the trouble of taking it back, so I decided to try it. It has a very smooth, almost satiny surface and it warms up to charcoals very nicely. As you will see it behaves well in pastels too - who knew?
This is the first warm-up (15 min) drawing with charcoals and smooth paper.
I used to work on a smooth Strathmore surface with charcoal and pastel and really enjoyed it ... but at the time, I was also into a messy look ... fingerprints and all. But ... like you say, your blending is different on a paper with no tooth. Can you still get away without fixing? I really like this one. Is it 20x30 or 18x24?
ReplyDeleteIt is 18x24, and so far I can still get away with no fixing. I imagine like everything else though - the more you transport it and move it in and out of storage, etc. - the more medium that comes off. In the case of charcoal like this, it probably is not a big deal. But if you are layering that nice creamy pastel on top of other pastel - it is definitely going to flake off. And if layers are very thick, that will probably happen even if you use fixative, to some degree. I don't know, but I love the texture, so I'm going to do some more!
